Taziker Industrial undertook the most extensive refurbishment of Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s iconic Royal Albert Bridge in Plymouth in its entire history.
The scope of works included:
• Temporary lightweight Access Scaffolding to conduct proprietary strengthening repairs,
• Full System Scaffold and Encapsulation to 18 Phases across the main spans, the 3 iconic Portal areas and the 100ft tall central pier,
• Grit Blasting and Painting within each phase to remove up to 12 layers of Lead based Paint,
• Extensive Steelwork Repairs which have been devised to strengthen the structure whilst returning it to its original design through the removal of redundant elements fitted in the 1970's.
The Royal Albert Bridge is grade 1 listed, deemed to be of exceptional architectural and historic importance. The structure is over 150 years old and based in a very harsh, exposed environment. The bridge also provides the only mainline rail link into Cornwall, and thus had to remain running whilst the vast majority of the works were carried out. All these factors meant it was of paramount importance that TI’s whole approach to the project was tailored with the utmost precision in order to deliver the project safely, effectively and on time.
