Freyssinet has been at the forefront of specialised civil engineering technology, consultancy and installation since 1950. A leading specialist in concrete repairs, bridge bearings, post-tensioning, expansion joints, jacking and sprayed concrete, Freyssinet is renowned for delivering innovative solutions and pushing the envelope of structural and civil engineering solutions. Originally a specialist in bridge components and post-tensioning, Freyssinet has successfully expanded its portfolio of products and services into the repair, protection and strengthening of structures specialising in diagnostic surveys, repairs, refurbishment and cathodic protection to reinforced concrete on buildings and engineered structures in the marine and highway sectors. Freyssinet’s recorded projects have included many structures both new and old, utilising stay cables, post tensioning tendons, concrete repair, expansion joints, shock transmission units, bridge bearings, high tensile bar, water proofing materials, injection grouts and most recently, the innovative use of ultra high strength fibre reinforced concrete. Freyssinet is further supported by our own indigenous sister companies, Corrosion Control Services Limited (CCSL) - a specialist consultancy in the investigation and diagnosis of corrosion related deterioration, cathodic protection and electrochemical rehabilitation, and Aquaforce Limited, a specialist in-house hydro demolition team. The company has operated as principal contractor, specialist subcontractor and supplier throughout the UK and Ireland for over 50 years, and is able to support the full product and service range with an in–house engineering design team. Freyssinet has utilised all of these resources to secure major schemes, which has contributed to the success of the business and its continued growth. These schemes include: • Hammersmith Flyover (the UK’s first and most significant full post tensioning replacement with a value of over £23 million), • Glasgow Underground refurbishment (a high profile full refurbishment of over 10km of tunnels) • Dong Siri oil platform strengthening works (the first ever fully watertight cable retro-fit bracing system applied to an oil platform). • Gatwick Car park (A new project just won which adopts innovative ultra high strength fibre reinforced concrete and robotic hydro-demolition).

  • An Innovation in Bridge Management (490.35 KiB)

Freyssinet presents its innovative ElevArch technique, devised to provide an effective alternative to overbridge demolition. The revolutionary technique for vertically jacking masonry bridge arches minimises intrusion to the rail environment, significantly reducing cost, time and resources required.

Freyssinet ElevArch® Bridge Lift Trial

On 26 October 2016, Freyssinet’s ElevArch® technique was trialled in a live demo in front of 120 guests from the rail sector, including Network Rail, Aktins, Arup, Arcadis, DfT and J. Murphy Group.

The 161-year-old, 220 tonne masonry arch bridge on Moco Farm in Buckinghamshire was successfully raised 900mm using ten 50 tonne jacks.

Freyssinet was invited to participate in RSSB’s Innovation Programme for The Avoidance of Bridge Reconstruction in 2014. From this, the company’s innovative ElevArch® concept was born - a revolutionary technique for vertically jacking masonry bridge arches, designed to minimise intrusion to the rail environment compared to other techniques, significantly reducing cost, time and resources. The ElevArch® lift trial was the result of two years of innovative thinking and careful planning.

Saltings Viaduct Expansion Joint Replacement

The A465 Saltings Viaduct on the Neath Interchange is a busy dual carriage way, bringing traffic to and from the Swansea area.

Assessment of the viaduct indicated that essential maintenance was required to replace the expansion joint located on the east side of the bridge on both the westbound and eastbound carriageways.

Freyssinet was appointed by the client, Cemex, on behalf of South Wales Trunk Road Agent (SWTRA) for the Welsh Government to design, supply and install a new expansion joint on the bridge.

Thousands of vehicles use the bridge every day and as such, every effort was made to minimise inconvenience to road users. Freyssinet installed a cover plate system, which allowed traffic flow during day time hours and the work was completed during night time closures.

After removing the existing joint, Freyssinet’s in-house hydrodemolition team Aquaforce removed the surrounding concrete, before installing a fully galvanised Freyssimod LW 480 modular type joint, featuring new swivel bearing supports which allows good operation for whole life.

Freyssinet Immingham Structure Slide

During Christmas 2015, Freyssinet successfully slid a concrete bridge beneath the line of the Immingham to Ulceby railway line, just off Rosper Road in South Killingholme. The completion of these vital works is a critical part of the Highways England A160/A180 Port of Immingham Improvement Scheme in North East Lincolnshire, which will enhance road access into the port on this strategic route.
